In the wake of the utter devastation inflicted by the earthquake in Haiti, the efforts and contributions of people everywhere are crucial. If you’re looking for ways to help, try these organizations:

The U.S. State Department Operations Center has established a hotline for Americans seeking information about relatives in Haiti: (888) 407-4747.

The department cautioned that because of heavy volume, some callers may hear a recording.

Listed here are some leading examples of the many relief organizations which have mobilized for Haiti. Following is a list of relief organizations requesting donations, and other resources, arranged alphabetically. For independent evaluations of these groups, please see CharityNavigator.

Clinton Bush Haiti Fund In response to a request from President Obama to help with both long- and short-term needs in Haiti, former President Bill Clinton and former President George W. Bush established the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund (CBHF).

American Red Cross Disaster Online Newsroom

The American Red Cross is on the ground in Haiti.

Text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to American Red Cross relief for Haiti. The donation will be charged to your cellphone bill.

Spirit Airlines is offering 5,000 “free spirit” miles for donating to the Red Cross.
Choice Hotels is allowing members to use their points to donate to the American Red Cross Haiti relief effort.

AmeriCares CNN’s Ann Curry suggests donating to AmeriCares, who are “gearing up to take in medicines to Haiti,” she says.

International Medical Corps Santa Monica-based International Medical Corps says it has an emergency response team providing medical care outside the general hospital near the presidential palace in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince. Members of the team are also visiting hospitals around the city to assess their needs. The group is accepting donations on its website imcworldwide.org.

National Nurses United www.nationalnursesunited.org A national organization of registered nurses is calling for nurses throughout the U.S. to volunteer to assist Haitian residents by providing emergency short term and long term medical support. Nurses can sign up at the NNU Web site.

Unicef Donations to Unicef can be made online, by printing a form, or by calling 1.800.FOR.KIDS (1.800.367.5437).

United Nations World Food Program The United Nations World Food Program is the largest UN agency coordinating the response to the Haiti earthquake. Donations can be made at www.wfp.org.

Yele Haiti Haitian-born Wyclef Jean is asking his fans to donate to the community service organization he founded in Haiti, Yele Haiti. Donations can be made at the site, or automatically by texting YELE to 501501 to give $5. More information about Yele Haiti here.
