‘The medium is the massage,” quipped Marshall McLuhan, long before 24-7 cable, tweeting or iPhones. Cartoonists (whose own medium has changed little since cavemen drew on walls) are quick to exploit, extol or excoriate other media if the massage rubs us the wrong way. Bill Schorr’s headline horseman broadcast the Massachusetts election results the old-fashioned way. Mike Keefe’s blustering, quaking radio ranter rushed to bad judgment. And Jeff Koterba’s self-congratulatory corporate conspirators couldn’t wait to disseminate free speech.
