James, two teammates test positive for influenza

LeBron James and teammates Darnell Jackson and Coby Karl have tested positive for Influenza A, and are being treated as if they have the H1N1 virus.

H1N1, also known as swine flu, is a strain of Influenza A, and though the Cavaliers have not gotten back H1N1 test results on the three, the team said it is being proactive in treating players and the traveling party to Texas. The Cavs play at San Antonio today and in Dallas on Saturday.

James, who will travel with the team, returned to practice Thursday after spending two days resting at home.

Six Cleveland players have had flu-like symptoms. Guard Andre Barrett and forward J.J. Hickson are not making the Texas trip.

Johnson earns pole at Concord

Jimmie Johnson, the three-time defending Sprint Cup champion and points leader, earned the pole for Saturday’s race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., with a blistering lap of 192.376 mph.

Mark Martin, sitting second in points, will start second after a lap of 191.816 mph. Kasey Kahne qualified third, followed by Matt Kenseth and Tony Stewart.

World title goes to Uchimura

Kohei Uchimura ran away with the men’s title at the world gymnastics championships in London, adding it to his silver medal from the Beijing Olympics. He led from the second event, and his final score of 91.500 points was more than 2 1/2 better than Daniel Keatings, who delighted the O2 Arena with Britain’s first all-around medal ever.

Russia’s Yury Ryazanov was third.

American Tim McNeill finished seventh at his first ma- jor international competition and national champion Jonathan Horton, a pre-meet favorite for the podium, was 17th after falls on three events.

AC Milan seeks help after injury

AC Milan is hoping for compensation from the U.S. Soccer Federation because defender Oguchi Onyewu was injured in a World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.

“I’m very angry because once again the national teams take players and we lose out due to injuries,” AC Milan Chief Executive Adriano Galliani told Italian media.

Onyewu tore the patellar tendon in his left knee late in Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw against Costa Rica in Washington. He left Standard Liege after last season and signed a three-year contract with AC Milan in July.

Nadal advances in Shanghai

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic had straight-set wins to advance to the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters on a day when two more players retired with injuries. The top-seeded Nadal, aiming for his first title since winning the Rome Masters in May, defeated Tommy Robredo, 6-1, 6-4.

Djokovic moved into the quarterfinals by stopping qualifier Rainer Schuettler, 6-4, 6-2, closing out the match with back-to-back aces.

Top-seeded Flavia Pennetta retained her chance of reaching the WTA Championships by defeating Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, to reach the Generali Ladies quarterfinals in Linz, Austria.

She next plays unseeded Ioana Raluca Olaru, who rallied to defeat qualifier Julia Goerges, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

Second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska defeated Alize Cornet, 6-4, 7-5. --

Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki overpowered Katie O’Brien, 6-0, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Japan Women’s Open in Osaka.

The U.S. Open finalist will face Aleksandra Wozniak in the quarterfinals.

Champions Tour winner Tom Pernice Jr. shot a bogey-free, nine-under 62 for a share of the first-round lead with Troy Matteson and Spencer Levin in the PGA Tour’s Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas.

Penn State sued by ex-tailback

A former Penn State tailback who hoped to play in the NFL claims in a lawsuit that authorities ruined his professional aspirations after filing a rape charge against him that was later dropped.

An attorney for Austin Scott filed the civil suit this week against Centre County prosecutors, Penn State police and the university in federal court in Williamsport. The suit said Scott suffered “mental pain and suffering” and diminished “earning capacity” because of the case.
