Fight corn syrup by taxing it

Re: David Lazarus’ consumer column “Turning a deaf ear to ad blitz for corn syrup,” Sept. 27:
If the government stopped subsidizing the surplus production of corn and put a prohibitive tariff on the importation of corn syrup, it would cease to be a cheap (a.k.a. taxpayer-subsidized) option.
Or what about the proposed junk food tax? Wouldn’t such actions go a long way toward curbing the obesity epidemic and reducing the healthcare emergency in this country?
