As a UCLA alumnus (1966) and sports fan, I find myself divided about today’s article [“He sets bar high,” Sept. 28] that Rick Neuheisel wants to turn our football program into an elite one.

How could I not want that? Well, I teach at another local state university and have just been laid off because of the state budget cuts that affect so many people. So I have to ask, what’s it going to cost in money, energy and moral character to improve the UCLA football team? The article lists the university’s academic standards as the first of three obstacles to the team winning national titles. We supposedly even lost top recruits to, of all schools, the academically top-notch Cal because of our standards! So if we would have to sacrifice academics, whether because of standards or money, to become better at sports, I think that’s where I draw the line and say, “no thanks.”
