BUSINESS BRIEFING

Times Wire Reports

Google Inc. Chief Executive Eric Schmidt, who stepped down from Apple Inc.’s board in August, said pressure from the Federal Trade Commission didn’t influence his decision.

Google and Apple aren’t direct competitors, Schmidt said at an event in Washington. He also said he hoped that Genentech Inc. Chairman Arthur Levinson didn’t have to leave the boards of either Google or Apple.

Apple said in August that Schmidt’s effectiveness as a director would be diminished as he needs to recuse himself from more meetings because of potential conflicts of interest. Google has expanded into computer and mobile-phone software, creating competitors to Apple’s products.
