Glendale SWAT teams were in a standoff late Friday with a man who had barricaded himself in an apartment and then fled to the roof.
According to Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz, the incident began when officers pulled a vehicle over for a minor traffic infraction. A male passenger with a bloodied face jumped out of the car and ran, Lorenz said.
Officers pursued the man into an apartment building in the 400 block of West Lexington Drive near Pacific Avenue. The man, who Lorenz said has a history of mental instability, was next seen brandishing a rifle. He disregarded police orders to drop the weapon and barricaded himself inside what police said was his own apartment.
Lorenz said the man somehow made his way from the apartment to the roof, were he walked around while television news helicopters hovered.
Authorities evacuated the building and closed streets in the surrounding neighborhood.
