What’s at stake in toll road fight

Re “Setback for toll road extension,” May 11
Reps. Susan Davis (D-San Diego) and Loretta Sanchez (D-Santa Ana) got it right. The Transportation Corridor Agencies got special exemptions from state laws that protect our parks and environment; laws that every other developer and agency have to follow in California. No one should be above the law when it comes to our state’s natural resources.
San Onofre State Beach is among the last remaining open spaces along the coast in Orange and San Diego counties. The park encompasses beautiful beaches with near-pristine water quality, an extraordinary watershed, 11 endangered or threatened species, an incredibly diverse habitat and miles of recreational opportunities. We must protect this valuable resource and make sure that the TCA does too.

In an emergency, minutes mean lives. Mission Hospital is the only trauma center in south Orange County. If there is an accident or emergency that shuts down Interstate 5, there is no other way for anyone to get to our hospital.
I wonder if Sanchez considered that before voting to stop the Foothill South tollway, leaving this area of south Orange County choked in traffic.
