In the second such incident in less than 24 hours, police shut down part of a terminal at LAX after a machine detected a device that resembled a weapon in a piece of checked luggage.
Authorities evacuated part of Terminal 1 shortly before noon Thursday and diverted traffic on the upper-level roadway for about 90 minutes so the LAPD bomb squad could examine the bag at the ticket counter, officials said.
The device, which had looked like a pipe bomb to screeners, turned out to be a sprinkler pipe sample being transported by a business executive.
About six flights were delayed.
On Wednesday night, part of Terminal 2 was evacuated and the bomb squad called after screeners discovered two replicas of mortar shells in a traveler’s checked bag. Flight operations were unaffected.
