College should be for everyone

Re “UCLA to get twice as many black freshmen,” May 12
It is not the number of blacks (or choose your favorite politically correct minority) who get admitted to a college that counts. It’s how many graduate, a statistic that papers rarely write about. The headline for the article could just as easily have read, “UCLA suffers an alarming drop in the number of Asian and Pacific Islanders who intend to enroll.”

At Palms Middle School, a diverse middle school in Los Angeles where I am the principal, we are being proactive in exposing our students to college. This month all our eighth-graders visited a local college campus (including UCLA). We also bring college counselors to our school to educate parents and students as to what requirements are necessary for applications.
With early exposure, more students of all backgrounds will be prepared to meet the challenges of higher education.
