* at Chicago 5, Washington 3: Nationals starter John Patterson left the game in the third inning because of a sore right biceps with the Cubs leading, 2-0. Reliever Levale Speigner, given as much time as he needed to warm up, couldn’t find the strike zone and issued three bases-loaded walks as the Cubs scored four times to take a 5-0 lead.

* at San Francisco 9, Philadelphia 4: Barry Bonds led off the second inning and hit the first pitch from Jon Lieber over the fence in center for his 10th homer, a drive that traveled an estimated 438 feet. It gave him 1,952 RBIs, moving him past Stan Musial into fourth place on the career list.

* San Diego 7, at Florida 6 (12 innings): Josh Bard’s single in the 12th inning drove in Brian Giles with the eventual winning run. The Padres trailed, 6-3, after seven and 6-4 after eight, before two outfield errors helped them score two unearned runs in the ninth to tie the score.

* at Milwaukee 6, Pittsburgh 3: Jeff Suppan won his fifth consecutive start, and J.J. Hardy hit a three-run homer for the Brewers (20-10), who are 10 games over .500 for the first time since 1998.

* Colorado 9, at Cincinnati 7: Chris Iannetta and Matt Holliday hit two-run homers and the Rockies won consecutive games for only the third time this season and clinched their first winning series on the road.

* New York 6, at Arizona 2: Jorge Sosa, making his first start after being recalled from triple-A New Orleans earlier in the day, helped the Mets win their 13th in a row at Chase Field.

* Houston 13, at St. Louis 0: Matt Albers yielded three singles in 7 1/3 innings for his first major league win and fellow rookie Hunter Pence hit a grand slam.

* Dodgers 6, at Atlanta 3: Tim Hudson lost for the first time in eight starts against the Dodgers. He was 5-0 against them.
