Vote Set to Pick Interim DeLay Replacement

AUSTIN, Texas — Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday ordered a Nov. 7 special election to temporarily replace resigned U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, a date that coincides with the general election.
DeLay resigned in June, but his congressional term doesn’t expire until January. The winner of the special election will fill his seat until then. In January, the winner of the general election will take the post.
In the general election, Nick Lampson is the Democratic candidate. He will file for candidacy in the special election as well, a spokesman said Tuesday.
Republicans have thrown their support to Houston City Councilwoman Shelley Sekula-Gibbs as a write-in candidate after the courts refused to remove DeLay from the ballot.
She also plans to be on the special election ballot, spokeswoman Lisa Diamond said.
For the special election, candidates have until 5 p.m. Friday to pay a $3,125 filing fee and submit their paperwork to run.
