Sun Moves On, but Douglas Hurt

The Connecticut Sun advanced to the WNBA’s Eastern Conference finals when its 68-65 victory over the Washington Mystics on Sunday at Uncasville, Conn., completed a sweep of the best-of-three first-round series.

Connecticut star Katie Douglas led the Sun with 16 points but left the game after injuring her right foot with 55 seconds left. She had just stolen the ball and felt something give while missing a fastbreak layup.

Douglas was to have X-rays today. She said she didn’t want to jump to conclusions but remembers telling the trainer, “Stretch my Achilles.”

Washington went on a 12-3 run to end the game, capped by Alana Beard’s layup with 10 seconds left to cut the Sun lead to 66-65 after she stole an inbounds pass. The Sun’s Lindsay Whalen then made two free throws, and Beard missed a three-point shot with three seconds left.

In WNBA awards, chosen by the media, the Sun’s Mike Thibault was coach of the year, with 37 votes to the Sparks’ Joe Bryant’s 17. Minnesota’s Seimone Augustus was rookie of the year.
