Bet you can eat just one of fest’s ‘oysters’

Sept. 14-18: Adventurous gourmands are invited to consume that most unorthodox edible: ahem, prairie oysters. The Testicle Festival at Rock Creek Lodge serves up more than 2 tons of bull testicles. There’s also plenty of alcohol to wash them down and help you forget what you’re eating. There are also bull chip-throwing contests, live musicians and good-humored debauchery.

Monterey, Calif.

Sept. 15-17: The 49th annual Monterey Jazz Festival features classic jazz, soul-jazz, fusion, big bands and, for those who can’t wait, future jazz across six stages on the grounds; this year’s artist-in-residence is singer Kurt Elling. Performances include: Sept. 15, Richard Bona, Babatunde Lea, Robert Glasper, Eldar and Taylor Eigsti; Sept. 16, Kurt Elling Quartet, Robben Ford Group, Yellowjackets and the Duke Robillard Band; Sept. 17 is Family Day and features Baby Loves Jazz (jazz versions of children’s songs) and a percussion play area; Sunday Grounds performers for adults include the Roy Hargrove Quintet and the Hank Jones Trio.

Sept. 15-17: Telluride Blues & Brews Festival offers music from headliners Lou Reed (Sept. 15), Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers (Sept. 16) and John Mayer (Sept. 17), as well as the Sept. 16 Grand Tasting, with liquid art from 50 microbreweries. A host of other musicians graces the main stage at Telluride Town Park and various juke joints.
