Debate on schools plan should happen locally
- Share via
Mayors Richard M. Daley of Chicago and Michael R. Bloomberg of New York write that reforming a school district is one of the most “lengthy” challenges a mayor can undertake, noting that mayoral takeover of New York schools “was the culmination of the efforts of four consecutive mayors” (Opinion, Aug. 3). This stands in sharp contrast to L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s proposed school takeover, the brainchild of one new mayor, which is steamrolling past the electorate at breakneck speed with most of the debate taking place 400 miles away in Sacramento. If Daley and Bloomberg really want to give L.A. the benefit of their experience, they should tell us to slow down, include the people most affected and gain local consensus.
