Chicago 6, at Toronto 4: Jon Garland outpitched Roy Halladay to win his eighth straight decision. Halladay (13-3) lost for the first time since June 18, at Florida -- a span of nine starts. He tied his season high by yielding five runs and 10 hits in six-plus innings. Garland (12-3) hasn’t lost since June 8, at Detroit -- a span of 11 starts.
at Detroit 7, Cleveland 6: Craig Monroe hit a two-out, two-run homer in the eighth inning to lift the Tigers. The Indians led, 6-4, after seven but the Tigers scored three in the eighth.
Boston 3, at Tampa Bay 2: David Ortiz had his 25th two-homer game to lead the Red Sox. His second homer -- his league-leading 39th -- was a solo shot in the eighth inning that gave the Red Sox a 3-2 lead.
New York 5, at Baltimore 4: Jorge Posada homered off Chris Ray to break a ninth-inning tie to give the Yankees their fifth consecutive victory.
Minnesota 8, at Kansas City 5: Jason Bartlett scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch by Scott Dohmann with two out in the 10th inning and Torii Hunter added a two-run single.
Oakland 5, at Seattle 2: The A’s beat the Mariners for the 10th consecutive time. Barry Zito (12-7) pitched seven innings, yielding one run and seven hits.
Around the league: As expected, the Orioles traded catcher Javy Lopez and $1.3 million to the Red Sox for a player to be named.... Tigers rookie Justin Verlander will skip his start on Sunday because of fatigue in his right arm. He is tied for the major league-lead in wins with Boston’s Curt Schilling (14-4) and his 2.79 earned-run average is second in the league.
