Only about one in 100 deaths in California was a homicide in 2003, the most recent year for which data are available. But the percentage, shown by the size of the circles, varied dramatically with age, sex, race, ethnicity and location. For example, there were 640 deaths from all causes among 16-to 30-year-old black males statewide in 2003; 57.19% of those deaths were homicides.
