Chicago Sees Trouble in High Porches

Two years after the collapse of a three-story porch caused 13 deaths in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, hundreds of structures in the city need repairs, government officials and building owners said.
Regulatory changes enacted in response to the tragedy have made it more difficult to obtain permits for the work, builders said. The process also has slowed as the number of applications has increased.
Thousands of Chicago buildings have the porches, which have evolved from emergency exits into areas for parties or relaxation.
