Don’t Forget About the Plight of Jockeys
The sport of horse racing and the people who are involved in it still continue to confuse me. A promising 2-year-old named What A Song was put down last week at Del Mar and that was sad. But last month in Virginia a 22-year-old jockey, Emanuel Sanchez, died of severe dehydration at Colonial Downs trying to make weight in order to ride racehorses for a living. To me that story deserved a front-page story, over and above the death of an animal.
