Regarding “Keep Your Mutts Off” [Aug. 9], we currently allow logging, mining and drilling on public natural lands.
These activities disrupt wildlife and ruin the backcountry experience for visitors far more than any dog ever could.

Off-leash dogs are the bane of birders, who have to snatch glimpses of shy birds from between passing dogs that charge into the undergrowth. This is because birds have a much larger flush radius for canine versus human passersby.

One solution for the problem of off-leash dogs on park trails would be to build fenced off-leash areas in the park. Most dogs have a fine time romping in a fenced area and don’t need to be running loose on the trails.

Do your dog a favor: Keep hold on the other end of his leash. He’d do the same for you.
