Ex-Massachusetts Gov. to Run in Native State

Former Massachusetts Gov. William F. Weld said he planned to seek the Republican nomination for governor of his native New York.

If he wins the race next year to succeed three-term incumbent George E. Pataki, he would be only the second person in U.S. history to be governor of two states. Sam Houston was governor of Tennessee and Texas in the 1800s. Pataki has announced he would not seek a fourth term next year.

“We are both looking forward to working together toward a successful result next year,” Weld said after meeting in New York with Stephen Minarik, the head of the state Republican Party.
