From Associated Press

Taliban-led militants clashed with coalition forces in eastern Afghanistan, killing a U.S. Marine and an Afghan soldier, the U.S. military said Friday.

The clash, in which four Afghan soldiers were also wounded, took place near Asadabad in Kunar province.

Violence appears to have escalated ahead of a Sept. 18 vote for a new parliament and provincial assemblies.

A day earlier, the U.S. military reported that a roadside bomb killed two American soldiers and wounded two others who were protecting workers on a U.S.-funded road project in the southern province of Kandahar.

About 183 U.S. service members have been killed in and around Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion that ousted the Taliban regime in late 2001.

Sixty of them have died during an upsurge of guerrilla attacks in the last six months. There also have been hundreds of Afghan fatalities, many of them suspected Taliban.
