Re “When justices won’t go,” Opinion, Aug. 13
Jonathan Turley raises an issue that I have long felt should be given more attention. I agree with Turley that age is a crude measure of a person’s mental competence.
On the other hand, I am intimately familiar with three relatives in their 80s who would be the first to admit that they are not as sharp as they used to be.
I admire, respect and deeply love all three of these individuals, but I would not want any of them on the U.S. Supreme Court, making decisions that affect the entire country. These are decisions that quite often are in effect for generations.
I do not have an answer to this dilemma, but the dialogue needs to begin now on how this issue can be resolved.
