* Mossimo Inc. said second-quarter profit more than doubled on a 45% jump in sales as sales of its women’s apparel and shoes at Target Corp. stores continued to thrive. The Santa Monica-based apparel designer said profit totaled $2.2 million, or 14 cents a share, compared with $1 million, or 6 cents, a year earlier. Revenue in the period ended June 30 was $9 million.
* Sport Chalet Inc. said fiscal first-quarter profit nearly tripled, to $389,344 or 6 cents a share, from $136,829 or 2 cents, a year earlier. The La Canada Flintridge-based sportings goods chain said sales rose 17% to $72.1 million, in part because of the addition of five new stores. Sales at stores open at least a year rose a robust 4.9%, thanks to strong sales of shoes.
* El Pollo Loco Inc. said it returned to profitability in the second quarter, earning $2.3 million, contrasted with a $270,000 loss a year earlier. Revenue at the Irvine-based chain of Mexican charbroiled-chicken eateries climbed 10% to $61.2 million. Sales at restaurants open at least a year rose 9.4%.
* SRS Labs Inc. said second-quarter profit doubled to $513,734, or 3 cents a share, on a 15% increase in revenue to $6.1 million. The Santa Ana maker of audio systems said a downturn in semiconductor revenue was more than offset by gains in its licensing unit.
