She’ll take ‘Revenge’

Re Carina Chocano’s “Making Movies by the Numbers” [July 31]: I have to agree with director Michael Bay, as quoted by Chocano, “[Bleep] the critics.”
She suspects many people attended “Revenge of the Sith” under duress, like a “bad date.” I guess one girl’s bad date is another’s true love. No one I know has seen this archetypal gem “because it felt like a civic obligation.” Please, Ms. Chocano, do not feel such obligation in the future.
Apparently, when a movie rakes in “eleventy-thousand zillion trillion,” critics like Chocano cannot imagine that it might also “speak to [the] human experience” of moviegoers. The good folks who, with me, continue to grieve the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker seem to have a capacity Chocano and other critics lack: the capacity to grieve their private tragedies and the larger tragedies of our world.
I do not have a quick fix for the box office slump. I do agree with Chocano that my movie-loving dollars will continue to be spent on films -- like “Revenge of the Sith” -- that “inspire a sense of identification” with my human experience.
