From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The county planning commission Thursday denied by a 3-0 vote a controversial request to build a Christian-sponsored boys camp on 50 acres in the San Bernardino Mountains.
The Royal Rangers camp was to include a conference center, archery and gun ranges, swimming pools and a 900-seat amphitheater.
The county received more than 1,300 letters and postcards from residents who feared increased traffic, fire danger and noise in the remote Twin Peaks community.
The applicants have until Aug. 15 to file an appeal with the Board of Supervisors.
