Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen has reprimanded Arizona Coach Dick Tomey for derogatory comments about officiating in the Wildcats’ 14-10 loss at Oregon.
Tomey was upset over a no-call on a punt return involving Oregon’s Wesly Mallard, who knocked Arizona’s Michael Jolivette out of the game with a headfirst hit, dislodging Jolivette’s helmet. Tomey says Mallard speared Jolivette, who suffered an 11-stitch gash in his chin.
“I think it was a malicious blow,” Tomey said. “It is a frightening thing when you see it. The media has a feeding frenzy about it on TV. The crowd has a feeding frenzy about it. Michael is so lucky. He could have been hurt badly.”
Tomey also complained about a no-call against Oregon safety Ryan Mitchell, who Tomey claims face-guarded and grabbed receiver Brad Brennan with 18 seconds left.
“You cannot fail to make a call in that situation,” Tomey said Sunday after reviewing film of the game.
