* Gail Buckner, a certified financial planner and senior vice president of Putnam Investments, will speak on “Strategies to Maximize Retirement Finances: For Those Planning and Those Already There” at a meeting of the Santa Barbara / Ventura chapter of the American Assn. of Individual Investors.
The nonprofit educational association meets at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at Louis Lowry Davis Center, 1232 De La Vina St., Santa Barbara.
The event is open to the public and costs $8 for members and guests, $9 for others.

* The Internal Revenue Service and the state Employment Development Department will present a seminar on misconceptions about day labor, the difference between employees and independent contractors, state payroll reporting requirements and federal payroll reporting requirements.
The seminar is from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 1, with lunch at noon. The seminar will be at the Ventura Taxpayer Service Center at 4820 McGrath St., Suite 250, Ventura. Seating is limited.
