Re “Low-Scoring Valley Schools to Get State Help,” Oct. 17.
San Fernando Valley schools must work with evaluators to improve students’ achievement. Perhaps these evaluators, before coming up with a solution to the problems in our schools, should spend one week in a low-income area elementary, first-grade, second-grade, third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classroom. They may find a 9-year-old third-grader who doesn’t know the letters of the alphabet and a fourth-grader who doesn’t know the multiplication table of two. They may find students from a foreign country who sit quietly without understanding one single word the teacher is saying. And when the teacher asks the students if they understand a brand-new lesson and they all say “yes,” most of the time it means “no.”
And on they move, on to the next lesson.
