Clark Leads Cleveland Charge, 37-29

Matthew Clark rushed for 307 yards and four second-half touchdowns and Cleveland High overcame a 16-point deficit to defeat host El Camino Real, 37-29, on Friday night in a West Valley League game.

Clark, who had his second 300-yard rushing game in as many weeks, carried 22 times and scored on runs of 45, 11, 23 and 80 yards and three two-point conversion runs for the Cavaliers (6-1, 2-0). He rushed for 199 yards in 13 carries in the second half.

The Conquistadores (2-5, 0-2) drove 62 yards on their final possession, but quarterback Jeremy Boyle fumbled at the Cleveland 10-yard line with 19 seconds remaining.

Cleveland, which committed four turnovers in the first half, trailed, 16-0, before Clark broke for a 45-yard touchdown run on the Cavaliers’ first play of the second half.

El Camino Real answered with Keondray Washington’s eight-yard scoring run, his second touchdown, for a 22-8 lead.

But Cleveland scored four unanswered touchdowns, including three by Clark, and took a 37-22 lead on Antwine Barfield’s one-yard run with 4:19 remaining.

El Camino Real closed to within 37-29 on a Marlon Barnett’s seven-yard touchdown reception from Boyle on 58-yard drive with 3:06 remaining.

El Camino Real built a 16-0 first-half lead on a field goal, a 33-yard touchdown pass from Boyle to Terrish Weston and Washington’s two-yard run.

Boyle completed 12 of 25 for 176 yards. Weston had five catches for 112 yards.

Robert Padilla of Cleveland had three interceptions.
