The city will put down a $209,250 deposit on 12 vacant acres in west Newport Beach that officials have been trying to turn into a community park for more than a decade.
“That’s really good news,” said Councilwoman Jan Debay at last week’s council meeting. “It’s a nice way to end my eight years.”
The site at West Coast Highway and Superior Avenue “probably has one of the best views in the city,” she said. “It will be a real showpiece.”
The deposit will lock in the price for the site at nearly $4.2 million, Debay said.
A year after making the initial deposit, the city will have to put down another $335,750 to hold on to its exclusive right to buy the property, Debay said.
