No. 2 Mater Dei Outlasts St. Joseph in Girls’ Volleyball

Junior Breegan Mulligan had 28 kills to help Mater Dei defeat Lakewood St. Joseph, 15-12, 9-15, 15-13, 9-15, 15-5, in a Serra League girls’ volleyball match Thursday at Mater Dei.
Mater Dei, the second-ranked team in the county and the top-ranked team in the Southern Section Division I-A poll, improved to 8-0 and 2-0 in league.
Melissa Courtney had 20 kills for St. Joseph (11-2, 2-1), the top-ranked team in Division II-A.
In the Pacific Coast League:
No. 5 Corona del Mar 3, University 2--Lindsay Anstandig had 22 kills for host Corona del Mar (6-2, 4-0), which won, 15-13, 5-15, 15-3, 10-15, 15-9. Melissa Zapiain had 19 kills for the Trojans (5-4, 2-2).
In the Sunset League:
No. 9 Esperanza 3, No. 8 Los Alamitos 0--Kristy Chester and Julie Handy had 10 kills each for host Esperanza (7-3, 4-0), which swept, 15-12, 15-8, 15-5.
Sara Kroneberger had 10 kills for Los Alamitos (8-5, 3-1).
In Freeway League boys’ cross-country:
Sonora 17, Buena Park 47--Damian Nives of Sonora finished the three-mile course at Craig Park in 15 minutes 26 seconds and set a course record, breaking his 1999 mark by 19 seconds.
In South Coast League boys’ water polo:
No. 9 El Toro 10, No. 5 San Clemente 9--Brett McCleave scored five goals and Jeremy Randall had 15 saves to lead visiting El Toro (10-8, 2-0). It is the second time this week the Chargers have beaten a higher ranked team. Tuesday the Chargers beat seventh-ranked Servite, 10-9.
In nonleague water polo:
No. 7 Servite 10, South Pasadena 6--Vincent Bevins scored three of his four goals in the third quarter to help lead Servite (13-5) back from a 5-1 halftime deficit.
