TEAM TO BEAT
Palmdale’s defense gives up a lot of yardage, but its offense, led by quarterback Terry Furlow and receiver Tyrone Culver, has more than made up for it. The Falcons played the region’s toughest nonleague schedule and emerged 3-1-1.
CHALLENGERS
Antelope Valley (4-1) hasn’t played as tough a schedule this year and that has helped the Antelopes reach league play with minimal injuries for the first time in several years. Their defense is strong and an option offense guided by quarterback Demetre Booker is formidable. Defending champion Highland (2-3) has sputtered but played better recently and has the horses to contend.
THE REST
Littlerock’s defense has been impressive, but the Lobos (2-3) need a healthy John Ford at running back to contend. A recent victory over Saugus indicates Quartz Hill can be competitive. Lancaster (2-3) has faced off-field hardship in recent weeks.
