Birmingham About to See the Light

After months of delay, Birmingham High has started construction on lights for its baseball field.

Holes are being dug and poles have been ordered from Texas. The $165,000 project is being paid for mostly from Proposition K funds, a 1996 tax assessment measure that allocates public money to improve parks and recreation facilities in Los Angeles.

When the project is completed in two months, Birmingham will become the only City Section school in the Valley to have lights for baseball games.

Birmingham could become the site for a day-night doubleheader in the City playoffs for the semifinals.

The school intends to make the facility available to other high schools to hold night baseball games, according to athletic director Rick Prizant.

Funds were approved for the project in 1998.

FOOTBALL

* Mike Pringle, from Kennedy High, set or tied four Canadian Football League or team records by running for four touchdowns Monday in the Montreal Alouettes’ 45-15 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos at Montreal.

Pringle increased his season total to 18 rushing touchdowns, tying the CFL record. He surpassed Montreal’s team record of 17 rushing touchdowns in a season.

Pringle’s 57 rushing touchdowns as an Alouette broke the team career record of 55. He also tied the team record for rushing touchdowns in a game for the second time this season. Pringle equaled the mark Aug. 3 against Saskatchewan.
