NORTH HOLLYWOOD — An invalid confined to his bed died and a woman was critically injured in an apartment fire, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said Tuesday.
The fire started about 9:50 p.m. Monday at an apartment in the 14000 block of Oxnard Street, said fire spokesman Jim Wells, who said one of the victims had apparently been smoking in bed.
The man, who is about 60 years old, has not been identified, said Scott Carrier, a spokesman for the county coroner’s office.
Jolene Hamner, 63, was in critical condition at Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital with burns to 30% of her body, spokesman Larry Weinberg said. Hamner suffered second-degree burns to her face and second- and third-degree burns to her back, right arm and left leg, he said.
Wells said the blaze caused about $40,000 in damage.
