1. FLORIDA STATE (5-1) lost to No. 7 Miami, 27-24. Seminoles became first No. 1 team to lose in regular season since Ohio State lost to Michigan State, 28-24, on Nov. 7, 1998. Next: Duke, Saturday
2. NEBRASKA (5-0) defeated Iowa State, 49-27. Pass defense has to be a concern to Cornhuskers, especially with a Nov. 28 game at Oklahoma now looming large. Next: at Texas Tech, Saturday
3. VIRGINIA TECH (5-0) defeated Temple, 35-13. Michael Vick turns in another so-so performance, but the Hokies’ continue to feast on the lowly Big East. Next: West Virginia, Thursday
4. KANSAS STATE (6-0) defeated Kansas, 52-13. Except for their schedule, the Wildcats have nothing to be ashamed of. That will begin to change this week. Next: No. 10 Oklahoma, Saturday
5. CLEMSON (6-0) defeated North Carolina State, 34-27. Tigers weren’t expected to be challenged until a Nov. 4 game at Florida State, but they struggled against Wolfpack. Next: Maryland, Saturday
6. MICHIGAN (4-2) lost to Purdue, 32-31. Maybe life is fair. Wolverines should have lost two weeks ago against Illinois, but they should have defeated the Boilermakers. Next: Indiana, Saturday
7. MIAMI (4-1) defeated No. 1 Florida State, 27-24. Temple could prove troublesome, but the next big game on Hurricane schedule is Nov. 4 against Virginia Tech. Next: at Temple, Oct. 21
8. OHIO STATE (5-0) defeated No. 24 Wisconsin, 23-7. Buckeyes impersonated Terrell Owens’ afterward, as about 20 players danced on the Badgers’ ‘W’ at midfield. Next: Minnesota, Saturday

10. OKLAHOMA (5-0) defeated No. 11 Texas, 63-14. Sooner Coach Bob Stoops’ hiring of his brother, Mike, from Kansas State two years certainly to get play this week. Next: at No. 4 Kansas State, Saturday
11. TEXAS (3-2) lost to No. 10 Oklahoma, 63-14. Texans never forget. They remember the Alamo and they certainly won’t forget this monstrous loss to the hated Sooners. Next: at Colorado, Saturday
12. FLORIDA (5-1) defeated Louisiana State, 41-9. The next two weeks could go a long way toward determining the Gators’ fate. First comes Auburn, then Georgia. Next: No. 15 Auburn, Saturday
13. WASHINGTON (4-1) defeated No. 23 Oregon State, 33-30. Huskies go 1-1 against the Oregon schools, stay in Rose Bowl race and spoil Dennis Erickson’s return to Seattle. Next: at Arizona State, Saturday

18. USC (3-2) lost to Arizona, 31-15. It looks as if the rankings were wrong. It was the Wildcats, not the Trojans, who should have been ranked. That will be corrected this week. Next: Oregon, Saturday

20. MISSISSIPPI STATE (4-1) defeated No. 15 Auburn, 17-10. That’s two big victories in a row at home for the Bulldogs. Now let’s see them keep it going on the road. Next: at Louisiana State, Oct. 21
21. TENNESSEE (2-3) lost to No. 19 Georgia, 21-10. The Volunteers take a week off after a third consecutive defeat. It doesn’t get any easier, as Alabama comes to Knoxville. Next: Alabama, Oct. 21
22. NORTHWESTERN (5-1) defeated Indiana, 52-33. Maybe if the Wildcats could soften their nonconference schedule and not play the likes of TCU, they could go undefeated. Next: Purdue, Saturday
23. OREGON STATE (4-1) lost to No. 13 Washington, 33-30. A game effort for the Beavers in Dennis Erickson’s return to Seattle, but the kicking game isn’t up to par. Next: Stanford, Saturday
