GLENDALE — A program to help Latino students gear up for college will be developed by a Glendale middle school teacher who has won a national education fellowship grant.
Catherine Montoro, who teaches Spanish at Eleanor J. Toll Middle School, has received the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship Grant, named for the teacher-astronaut killed in the explosion of the Challenger spacecraft in 1986.
Montoro will use the $39,000 grant to create the Latino Student Initiative, a network of school, home and community resources aimed at encouraging Latino students and their families to think about and plan for college at an early stage.
