Irvine Beats No. 3 Newport Harbor

Krystle Davis had eight aces, five in a nine-point span in the third set, as No. 5 Irvine swept No. 3 Newport Harbor, 15-4, 15-6, 15-8, in a Sea View League girls’ volleyball opener Monday night at Irvine.
Newport Harbor had a 5-3 lead in the third game, but the Vaqueros (6-1, 1-0) reeled off the next nine points behind Davis’ serving to take the lead for good.
Irvine’s Jody Carlson played in her first match since suffering an ankle injury two weeks ago. She had five aces and seven digs.
Taylor Govaars had seven kills for Newport Harbor (1-4, 0-1).
In another Sea View League match:
Laguna Hills 3, Woodbridge 0--Kristin Brooks recorded 11 kills as the Hawks (7-3, 1-0) won, 15-7, 15-11, 15-8.
In nonleague girls’ volleyball:
Rosary 3, Magnolia 0--Marla Smith had 11 kills and Kim Hayes added seven kills and three blocks in Rosary’s 15-3, 15-1, 15-2 win.
In Serra League girls’ golf:
No. 4 Santa Margarita 122, No. 7 Corona del Mar 132--Megan Mulhaupp had seven pars in a two-over 38 at Tijeras Creek. Alison Schauppmer of Corona del Mar (4-2) and Brenda Progar of Santa Margarita (7-1) each shot 41.
No. 6 Rosary 136, Lakewood St. Joseph 151--At Lakewood, freshman Jennifer Sanders shot a three-over 40 to earn medal honors for Rosary.
In nonleague girls’ golf:
No. 10 Los Alamitos 276, Newport Harbor 285--At Big Canyon and Skylinks, Los Alamitos’ Jamie Oliver was the medalist with an 87.
St. Margaret’s 139, Orange 161--Taylor McClurg shot an eight-over 43 to medal for St. Margaret’s (8-2) at Willowick. Orange is 7-3.
In nonleague girls’ tennis:
Mater Dei 14, Rosary 4--Senior Jodie Nygaard and freshman Carolina Velasco swept their singles sets for the Monarchs (4-2, 1-0). The match was originally scheduled for last Thursday, but was postponed because of a scheduling conflict at Rosary.
In nonleague boys’ water polo:
No. 1 San Clemente 14, La Habra 9--Pat McCann scored five goals and Josh Hewko had three as San Clemente (8-1) built a 12-3 halftime lead. Gabe Pacheco had four goals for La Habra (10-6).
