MODERN PENTATHLON: Emily deRiel of Havertown, Pa., won the silver medal in the first Olympic women’s modern pentathlon, the first medal for an American in the sport since Robert Beck won a bronze in 1960.
Stephanie Cook of Britain caught DeRiel in the last lap of the 3-kilometer run and won the gold. Kate Allenby of Britain won the bronze.
WATER POLO: Hungary won its record seventh water polo gold medal--the first since 1976--with a 13-6 victory over Russia.
CANOE/KAYAK: Birgit Fischer ended her amazing Olympic career with a German record seventh gold medal, teaming with Katrin Wagner to win the women’s 500-meter kayak pairs.
Knut Holmann of Norway won the men’s solo 500 kayak for a Norwegian record sixth Summer Olympic medal.
TEAM HANDBALL: Denmark defended its gold medal in women’s handball, coming back from a six-goal deficit to beat Hungary, 31-27, in the final.
