Grand Jury Indicts 7 in San Marino Kidnapping

A preliminary hearing for seven people charged with kidnapping a 3-year-old San Marino boy was canceled Thursday after prosecutors secured an indictment from the Los Angeles County Grand Jury, a defense attorney said.

The defendants will go straight to arraignment on Monday, charged with breaking into the boy’s home on March 20, kidnapping him and then demanding $1.5 million in ransom from his parents, said attorney Terrence Bennett.

With an indictment, prosecutors do not have to prove to a judge that they have sufficient evidence against the defendants and can proceed directly to arraignment. Los Angeles district attorney’s officials did not return calls seeking comment.

Bennett, who is defending 16-year-old Paul Thim, said he was surprised when prosecutors announced the indictment in court on Thursday.
