Bailey Gets Memorable Win Aboard Dubai Millennium

ASCOT, England — Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey won for the first time in Europe, riding Dubai Millennium to an eight-length victory Wednesday in the Prince of Wales’ Stakes at the Royal Ascot meet.
Bailey was the substitute rider for Frankie Dettori, who survived a plane crash at Newmarket, England, three weeks ago.
With Dettori watching, Bailey won aboard a 4-year-old colt who is considered the best horse in the world.
“I haven’t seen anything on the other side of the pond that could touch him,” Bailey said.
Dubai Millennium, owned by Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin Racing, was sent off as the 5-4 favorite in the six-horse field and easily won the 1 1/4-mile Group I race.
Sumitas, a 66-1 longshot, was second. Beat All was third and Sendawar, supplemented into the field for $30,000 by his owner, the Aga Khan, was fourth.
Dettori said he hopes to return to racing in August. He broke his right ankle and sustained head and facial injuries in the crash.
