Artown, Reno’s annual visual and performing arts festival, is July 1-31. Here are the highlights:
* The Nevada Museum of Art, 160 W. Liberty St., has on view “Communicating America’s Vision: The Nevada Bell Collection” from July 1 through Sept. 3. The exhibition of modern and contemporary work includes pieces by Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Georgia O’Keefe and William Wegman. (775) 329-3333.
* The rock ‘n’ roll space musical “Return to the Forbidden Planet” will be performed by the Nevada Repertory Company July 7-8 and 12-15 at 7:30 p.m. at Redfield Theater, University of Nevada, Reno campus. (775) 784-6847. Also free performances at Wingfield Park, 1st Street at Arlington Avenue, on July 20, 22 and 23 at 8:15 p.m.
* Area 51 Dance Theatre, the modern dance troupe from northern Nevada, performs “Close Encounters” July 20 at various locations; “Take Me to Your Leader” July 15 at Wingfield Park; and “Inside” July 21 at Hawkins Amphitheater, on Lakeside Drive in Bartley Ranch Park. (775) 322-1343.
* The modern string ensemble the Kronos Quartet performs July 23 at 7:30 p.m., the Nightingale Concert Hall, University of Nevada, Reno campus. (775) 784-6847.
* The performance troupe Project Bandaloop will dance along the exterior of the Riverside Hotel Artist Lofts using rock-climbing gear, on July 31 at 12:15, 5:30 and 8 p.m. (775) 329-2787.
