Moorpark College Assistant Is Hired by Thousand Oaks

Gary Wagner, former Moorpark College assistant, has been selected to coach baseball at Thousand Oaks High.

Wagner, 34, played at Camarillo High, Oxnard College and Arizona. He was the hitting coach at Moorpark and taught history and English at Thousand Oaks.

He was chosen over former Thousand Oaks infielder Rod Stillwell, who served as an assistant to former coach Bill Sizemore.

“We feel he has the passion we want to see in our baseball program,” Athletic Director Lou Lichtl said.

* Former Calabasas and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo pitcher Tanner Trasper has signed a free-agent contract with the Oakland Athletics.

BASKETBALL

* Mark Drucker, The Times’ Valley boys’ coach of the year last season at Taft High, has been appointed girls’ coach at the school. Derrick Taylor, Drucker’s assistant, will coach the boys’ team.

* The American Roundball Corp.’s Pro Player Summer Camp featuring Detroit Piston assistant coach Larry Drew as camp director, will be June 26-30 at North Hollywood High for players in grades 1-10. Information: (818) 995-3761.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Frances Santin of Cal State Northridge ran 57.24 seconds to place second in the women’s 400-meter low hurdles in a meet at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday to qualify for the U.S. Olympic trials at Cal State Sacramento from July 14-23.

Santin, a former standout at Taft High, broke the Big Sky Conference record of 58.10 set by Kris Schmitt of Montana in 1989, crushed her previous best of 58.50 and exceeded the trials qualifying standard of 57.80.

Northridge senior Brandi Prieto, runner-up in the women’s triple jump in the NCAA championships earlier this month, has also qualified for the trials.

* Fred Williams, who won the boys’ 100 and 200 meters for Taft High in the City Section championships last month, will attend Cal State Northridge.

Williams, third in the 200 in the state championships on June 3, signed with Cal State Fullerton last month, but Taft assistant Kenny Mitchell and a source close to the Northridge program said Williams is headed to CSUN.

Although Williams signed with Fullerton, the letter of intent is not binding because he is a non-qualifier for freshman eligibility under NCAA rules.

* David Malonson of Lakewood Mayfair High, Craig Hall of Antelope Valley College and Tammi Wallace of Mt. San Antonio College have signed with Cal State Northridge. LeiAnna Matthews of New Mexico will transfer to Northridge.

Malonson was the runner-up to Oliver Jackson of Royal in the boys’ long jump in the state championships and has a best of 24-0 1/4.

Hall, who attended Sylmar High, has a best of 10.62 in the 100.

Wallace placed second in the women’s 200 and third in the 100 in the state junior college championships last month.

Matthews, who will be a sophomore in the fall, ran 54.88 in the women’s 400 to place third in the Mountain West Conference championships last month.

FOOTBALL

* Bobby Connelly, offensive line coach at Cal State Northridge for one year, has resigned to become an assistant under former Northridge Coach Dave Baldwin at San Jose State.
