Death Penalty

* Miguel Munoz (letter, April 15) finds it curious that proponents of the death penalty find support in the fact the 68% of death penalty cases are overturned and says, “If close scrutiny of convictions means that two out of three are invalid, the conclusion I draw is that our our entire criminal justice system is failing us.” Munoz seems to think that 68% of those convicted are ultimately found innocent. Not so. It was the penalties, not the convictions, that were overturned. The convictions for murder still stand for 100% of the defendants in the study, even though 68% were spared execution.
