The La Habra Branch Library kicks off an annual program for children and young adults today in efforts to sustain their reading skills through the summer.
The Summer Reading Program, which includes “Library Kids Lead the Way,” for schoolchildren between kindergarten and sixth grade, and “Bookscape 2000” for teens in seventh grade and above, is geared to keep students interested in books, even though they’re out of school, library officials said.
Incentives such as key chains, book bags and food coupons will be given for each book read, and children will be able to enter a drawing for tickets to Disneyland for every 10th book read. Teenagers can enter every third book since they are more advanced readers and choose longer books, said Sherry Toth, children’s librarian.
The program runs through Aug. 12, when the Disneyland tickets will be awarded.
Youth interested in the Summer Reading Program can sign up at the library any time through Aug. 12 to participate. The La Habra Branch Library is at 221 E. La Habra Blvd. and open between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Saturday hours are 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. and the library is closed Fridays and Sundays.
