Rebels Allow Police to Resume Patrols

Solomon Islands radio said about 200 unarmed police were patrolling the streets of Honiara, under a deal with the militia leader who has controlled the capital since an attempted coup June 5. The Malaita Eagle Force handed the town back to police but refused to surrender its weapons. Fighting broke out between the Malaitan group and its Guadalcanal island rivals, the Isatabu Freedom Movement, after the coup attempt. Guadalcanal islanders resent the migration of Malaitans, who have taken many top jobs.
