Crude Oil Spills From Pipeline Into Channel

CARSON — More than 100 gallons of crude oil spilled out of a pipeline and into the soil and a nearby water channel Tuesday, authorities said.
Hazardous-materials teams contained the oil before it reached the ocean, authorities said.
The Chevron pipe had not been used since the 1970s but had residual oil inside and ruptured when workers were cleaning it, said county Fire Inspector Mark Tolbert.
County crews and officials from the California Department of Fish and Game and U.S. Coast Guard responded to the 9:15 a.m. accident at 223rd Street and Wilmington Avenue.
Over the next few days, investigators will seek to determine how the spill occurred and how to clean it up, Tolbert said.
