Averill Makes Impression in All-Star Series

If Brandon Averill keeps playing like he did Sunday, he’ll have to install a second phone line.

Averill, Villa Park’s standout pitcher/third baseman, doubled off the wall, drew two walks and scored twice for the South All-Stars in the series finale of the 31st North-South State All-Star Classic at Cal State Fullerton.

The North won, 13-6, to win the three-game series, two games to one, but Averill continued to impress college coaches.

Over the weekend he was contacted by coaches from UCLA, Pepperdine, UC Riverside and Cal State Northridge. Averill said he didn’t receive any official offers, but coaches told him they would track his progress this summer.

“I have no idea what’s going to happen,” said Averill, who also hit a run-scoring double in Friday’s game. “I have to go out and keep playing and see what happens.”

Averill, selected the Century League MVP the last two seasons, is also considering Cypress College.

Mission Viejo pitcher John Hudgins, who is trying to impress Oakland scouts after being drafted in the 20th round last week, also turned in an impressive performance over the weekend. He struck out 10 over five innings Friday.

Behind Hudgins, who will play for Stanford if he doesn’t sign with Oakland, the South won, 15-6, for its only win of the series.
