Reading Would Undermine TV

* In his June 4 Orange County Voices essay, “Separating the Facts and Fiction About Adults Who Cannot Read,” Todd Raphael obviously aims to devastate our economy.
How could this country continue to flourish economically if everyone living in it were literate in English?
What kind of shape would we be in if all the people in this country started to read and to think about what they read? Where would television, that guiding light of our culture, take us if newly literate people not only watched the commercials but also questioned their claims?
We cannot afford to sacrifice our illiterate workers, to replace them by robots. Electronic equipment that can do the jobs now done by illiterate people are electronically tricky and difficult to maintain. They require far more care than that which we now give to the illiterate people living in this country.
