New Fighting Reported Near Eritrean Port

ASMARA, Eritrea — Ethiopia and Eritrea said Thursday that fighting had broken out in the southern desert close to Eritrea’s Red Sea port of Assab, as peace talks aimed at ending the border conflict limped on with no sign of a breakthrough.
Each side accused the other of provoking the latest fighting, and each said it had inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy.
After a string of unsuccessful attempts at mediation, Ethiopia last month reignited the 2-year-old war with its neighbor in a massive offensive that penetrated deep into western Eritrea.
The United Nations estimates that as many as 750,000 Eritreans have been displaced by the fighting.
